Non-destructive testing (NDT)
NDT, or non-destructive testing, is a service Odin Diving A/S specializes in. We handle most types of underwater non-destructive testing. Our team includes Level I, II and III personnel, which allows us to perform all phases of the inspection, from planning to delivery of documentation.
Our approved procedures covers the following NDT forms:
- Ultrasonic Thickness
- Measurements
- Magnetic Particle
- Inspection
- Eddy Current Inspection
- ACFM
- Visual Inspection
NDT – Odin Diving A/S
At Odin Diving A/S we offer NDT. So what is NDT? NDT is the shortening for what we call non-destructive testing. As it indicates it is a form of testing that does not damage your ship or rig. Thus, it is a beneficial form of inspection that can test the state of a ship or rig without putting it at risk. At Odin Diving A/S we offer what we call underwater NDTs. This is beneficial, because it allows for carrying out tests without a need for dry docking, which can be timely, difficult and put the ship at risk. At Odin Diving A/S we offer five different forms of NDT:
- Ultrasonic Thickness
- Measurement
- Magnetic Particle
- Inspection
- Eddy Current Inspection
- ACFM
- Visual Inspection
We will go through these one by one, so you get a better understanding of what we can offer you. But first, let us explain to you why you should put us in charge of carrying out NDTs on your ship or rig.
NDT – Why you should choose Odin Diving A/S

Within NDT there are many approaches that test different aspects. At Odin Diving A/S we offer five different forms of underwater NDT. We will here give you an overview of what they entail regarding what they are testing and how.
Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement
Our first form of NDT is Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement. Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement tests the metal thickness of your ship. This type of testing is important, because your ship is exposed to elements such as water that constitute corrosion and thus erosion of the metal. When this happens the metal will thin out and thus not meet the established requirements for metal thickness. As the name implies this form of testing makes use of ultrasound waves. The reflection of these waves can be used to measure metal thickness. The equipment for these kinds of tests is small in size and therefore it is easy to carry out the testing on-site.
Magnetic Particle Inspection
Our second form of NDT is Magnetic Particle Inspection. Magnetic Particle Inspection tests for flaws in the metal by looking for discontinuities in its structure. This type of testing is important, because it exposes problems such as cracks in the metal that can have possible consequences for the function of your ship. As the name implies this form of testing makes use of magnetisation. When using magnetisation it is possible to detect flaws.
Eddy Current Inspection
Our third form of NDT is Eddy Current Inspection. As for the former types of testing, Eddy Current Inspection is able to test the state of your ship. This form of method can, for instance, detect general defects such as cracks. Thus, it is an important aspect regarding inspection and maintenance. As the name suggests this form of testing makes use of current. This form of testing allows for quick feedback; thus you will be able to receive an immediate report on the state of your ship.
ACFM
Our fourth form of NDT is ACFM. ACFM is short for Alternating Current Field Measurement. ACFM tests the state of the welds. Thus, it ensures that welds meet the required standards for a safe function by, for example, being free of cracks. ACFM testing bears a resemblance to Eddy Current Inspections and therefore this form of testing makes use of current as well
Visual Inspection
Our fifth form of NDT is Visual Inspection. Visual Inspection does not per se carry out any form of testing instead it inspects your ship or rig. The inspection is carried out by one of our skilled employees who is trained to spot problems. This form of inspection is important for ensuring the state of your ship or rig, because it can provide you with a general report of possible aspects that might be in need of maintenance. You can almost compare it to when you get a car maintenance inspection just in the context of ships and rigs.
